I just got off the phone with an entrepreneur who…<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

by all outward appearances, a VERY successful entrepreneur.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
However, our conversation didn\u2019t revolve around his successes…<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
but rather about how the more \u201csuccessful\u201d his business becomes, the more trapped he feels.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
His business has become his jail cell.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Making payroll\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Dealing with the endless employee drama\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Drastic swings in revenue\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Constant pushing and prodding to get people to do their jobs\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Never ending stress from having to fix everyone’s mistakes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Sure he:<\/div>\n
Takes nice vacations.<\/div>\n
Drives a beautiful car.<\/div>\n
Lives in a lovely house.<\/div>\n
Has a business business most envy\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But he\u2019s trapped.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
He is the glue holding the business together,<\/div>\n
If he leaves, even for a day, everything falls apart.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
His business has tremendous growth potential,<\/div>\n
and yet he keeps self-sabotaging that growth.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Although he talks a good talk\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Speaking eloquently and passionately about his company\u2019s goals and vision\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
yet, deep down he dreads having to DEAL with more\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
More frustration.<\/div>\n
More babysitting.<\/div>\n
More anxiety.<\/div>\n
More pressure from having to make payroll.<\/div>\n
And feeling more trapped.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Is that you?<\/div>\n
Do you need a get out of jail card?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
If so, here are the steps I gave my friend,<\/div>\n
and the same steps you\u2019ll want to take.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"1\ufe0f\u20e3\"<\/span> Major on the majors<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Sure there are a million minor details that make a business work.<\/div>\n
And yes, the details matter – a lot.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But for now, stop majoring on the minors.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
For example, stop trying to push, beg, and cajole your team to be more productive.<\/div>\n
Instead, teach them about labor efficient ratios (Wages to Gross Profit, Wage to Revenue, etc), and explain you\u2019ll be measuring and gauging their performance based on these ratios.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And then\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"2\ufe0f\u20e3\"<\/span> Give them their brains back<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Does your team:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\u2705\"<\/span> Ask you a million questions each day?<\/div>\n
\"\u2705\"<\/span> Seek the path of least resistance?<\/div>\n
\"\u2705\"<\/span> Sit and wait for direction before taking decisive action?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
If so, it\u2019s simply because they have NOT been trained to think for themselves.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
In an effort to be helpful, you may have created a codependent workforce.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Doing for others what they can and should do for themselves is a breeding ground for codependency.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The first step to reversing codependency is simple:<\/div>\n
Don\u2019t give them answers\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Instead give them questions.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
When they say, should I do X or Y,<\/div>\n
train yourself to respond with a question like,<\/div>\n
which do you think is the best option?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
If you\u2019re like I used to be,<\/div>\n
you probably have the bad habit of giving answers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I overcame this habit with sticky notes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I would place them on my desk, in my notebook, and on my computer.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The sticky notes said, Ask. Don\u2019t Answer.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
When you ASK instead of ANSWERING you give your team their brains back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And when they use their brains\u2026 it frees yours up.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"3\ufe0f\u20e3\"<\/span> Audit your time<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Ouch!<\/div>\n
Sounds terrible!<\/div>\n
That\u2019s because it is. \"\ud83d\ude09\"<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
During the early stages of growing your business time didn\u2019t matter.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Whatever needed to be done had to be done regardless of how much time it took you.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
That was then.<\/div>\n
But this is now.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
As Peter Drucker said, What gets measured gets improved.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
If you don\u2019t know how your time is being spent,<\/div>\n
then it\u2019s impossible to know what can be cut, eliminated, or which areas need MORE time.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Set a 15 minute timer.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Every time it goes off, write down what you did during that block of time.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
At the end of the review your time and look for themes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
How much time was spent on email?<\/div>\n
How much in meetings?<\/div>\n
Etc.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Do this for a week.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
This will be one of the most revealing exercises you ever do.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Next, decide what needs to be eliminated, reduced, and expanded\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
and then ensure your schedule the following week reflects those changes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The final step is to have your team do the same exercise.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
This trains for both efficiency (doing things quickly), and effectiveness (doing the right, high-value things).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
These three steps helped me and several of my clients get out of jail.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Thanks to these steps we are able to now enjoy our businesses.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And as our businesses continue growing, we don\u2019t become more trapped\u2026<\/div>\n
we actually become more free.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We don\u2019t possess any magic.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The same is possible for you.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And YOU can have the business you deserve much quicker than you even imagine.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But don\u2019t delay.<\/div>\n
Freedom favors the bold.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
