Think about it, from the time someone is four or five years old,<\/div>\n
until they graduate from college,<\/div>\n
they have someone –<\/div>\n
parents, teachers, and professors –<\/div>\n
holding them accountable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And once they get a \u201creal\u201d job, it doesn\u2019t get any better.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Most places of employment remove the need for people to think for themselves.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Instead, they have managers who \u201chold them accountable\u201d<\/div>\n
and watch their every move to ensure they are actually working.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
If you want to break this cycle you’re going to need clear and specific processes designed to empower your people\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
and give them their brains back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

There I said it.<\/div>\n
But it needed to be said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Back when I was constantly having to \u201chold my team accountable\u201d it wasn\u2019t their fault\u2026<\/div>\n
it was mine.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

My actions created an environment where self-accountability wasn\u2019t needed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Think about it, why would someone need to hold themselves accountable (and think for themselves), when they had me doing it for them?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
So if you want a self-accountable team, you have to stop trying to \u201chold them accountable,\u201d<\/div>\n
and instead give them the space and guidance they need to learn to hold themselves accountable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Which leads to #3.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"3\ufe0f\u20e3\"<\/span> Trust.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Trust is THE key ingredient in high-performance, self-accountable teams.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Each time a team member makes a commitment, a space is created.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
That space rests between their commitment and the fulfillment of that commitment.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It is in this space that we have a choice\u2026<\/div>\n
we can fill that space with trust –<\/div>\n
meaning we trust that the person will keep their commitment;<\/div>\n
or we can fill the space with suspicion –<\/div>\n
meaning we doubt the person will keep their commitment.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Our teams must understand this space.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They must understand it is their responsibility to consistently build trust by fulfilling their commitments,<\/div>\n
and that when they do not fulfill their commitments they are creating suspicion.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Ready to STOP having to:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83d\uded1\"<\/span> Do all the \u201cimportant\u201d work yourself?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\uded1\"<\/span> Babysit your team?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\uded1\"<\/span> Hold everyone accountable?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\uded1\"<\/span> Double and triple checking all their work?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\uded1\"<\/span> Beg, push, and prod just to get them to do what they’re supposed to do?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On the other hand,<\/div>\n
you can START having:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\"\ud83d\udc4d\"<\/span> A team you can trust with any project?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\udc4d\"<\/span> Freedom to spend your time in your genius zone?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\udc4d\"<\/span> A team that holds themselves and their peers accountable?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\udc4d\"<\/span> Full trust that your team will not only complete their work, but that they\u2019ll go the extra mile in the process?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\udc4d\"<\/span> A highly motivated team that eagerly shows up for work each day?<\/div>\n
\"\ud83d\udc4d\"<\/span> Predictable revenue and profits?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
All of those are possible for you!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But here\u2019s the key to making the transition:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
