Border Collies are one of the most common dogs used for herding.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
As leaders we can learn a LOT from the way these dogs lead a herd.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
One of the first things you\u2019ll notice is that they lead and guide from the back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They\u2019re not out front barking out commands.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They are quietly doing their work from the back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And if you happened to be on the front side of a herd, you\u2019d probably never know the dog was leading from the back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
As a matter of fact, it would appear the sheep or cattle in the front of the herd are leading and guiding all those who are following.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
This is exactly how you as a leader need to lead when things are going well.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
You need to be in the back quietly providing guidance and direction. You need to allow your team members to be out in the front.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They (not you) should be receiving the recognition and glory for leading those behind and around them.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But when things aren\u2019t going well, you need to become a bodyguard.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Have you seen the way the President\u2019s bodyguards lead the way when escorting through a potentially dangerous place?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Bodyguards go first.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They push obstacles out of the way.<\/div>\n
They take the brunt of the unruly crowds, all to ensure the President walks through unscathed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
As a leader you must do the same.<\/div>\n
When the going gets tough you have to move your leadership to the front.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
You have to protect your team.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Shield them from:<\/div>\n
uncertainty,<\/div>\n
chaos,<\/div>\n
And even the occasional irrational client.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It\u2019s your responsibility as a leader to clear the path and protect your team and your culture.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Sadly, most leaders today operate in a opposite manner.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They are like politicians\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
When things are going well, they are out front taking credit and showing off what \u201cthey\u2019ve\u201d done.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And when things aren\u2019t going well, they run to the back of the room, hide, and begin pointing fingers and passing blame.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Shame on them!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But you\u2026<\/div>\n
You are different.<\/div>\n
You are committed to building a healthy culture.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
A culture where amazing people thrive.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
