and completely unproductive and unnecessary.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As a matter of fact, it\u2019s virtually impossible to do.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Let me share what I mean\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But let\u2019s start with a question,<\/div>\n
If you\u2019re trying to hold your team accountable,<\/div>\n
how\u2019s that working for you?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Probably not so well.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Maybe it was was just me,<\/div>\n
but when I used to try to hold my team accountable I was constantly frustrated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I felt as if I was always having to remind my team of the simplest things.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Did you followup with the client?<\/div>\n
Did you send the email?<\/div>\n
Did you do this?<\/div>\n
Did you do that?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
All of this \u201cholding them accountable\u201d was extremely tiring and frustrating.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But the reality is, it wasn\u2019t only tiring and frustrating for me,<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
it was the same for them as well.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I hear you thinking,<\/div>\n
\u201dbut if I don\u2019t hold them accountable, who will?\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I used to have the same question,<\/div>\n
but now I know (and believe) the answer\u2026<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
You don\u2019t hold them accountable,<\/div>\n
you teach them to hold themselves and their teammates accountable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And when you do, magically you\u2019re no longer frustrated and tired from making sure everyone is \u201cdoing what they\u2019re supposed to be doing.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
You see, \u201cholding\u201d your team accountable communicates that you don\u2019t trust them.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
After all, if you believed your team members were amazing, responsible and dedicated to your vision, would you need to \u201chold\u201d them accountable?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Probably not.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And why is that?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Because you would trust them to hold themselves accountable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The key between a marginal team, and a high-performance team is who is doing the \u201cholding\u201d of the accountability.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
High-performance team hold themselves (and their peers) accountable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
So can we agree that it isn\u2019t our job as leaders to hold our teams accountable?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It\u2019s our job to ensure they are holding themselves accountable to the right things.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Once we\u2019ve done that, we must get out of the way and let them do what we hired them to do.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
