Creating Your Customer Avatar

WHAT THE HECK IS A CUSTOMER AVATAR? DO I NEED ONE?

After chatting with some of my friends in Raleigh, NC about their new business, I felt inspired to share about our conversation and how walking through the customer avatar worksheet guided our conversation!

RATHER WATCH OR EAVESDROP IN ON THE CONVO?

SO ABOUT MY FRIENDS…Mew and Currie are pretty awesome people. Currie sells mortgages and his lovely better half, Mew, owns a company called Eat Thai Raleigh.

Their entrepreneurship journey started THIS YEAR when Mew moved to the United States from her home country of Thailand. Eat Thai Raleigh offers personal cooking classes, dinner parties and weekly meal delivery.

Mew has developed a menu of delicious, authentic Thai dishes that she has mastered over the years. Not only is Mew a phenomenal cook, she is kind and creates a warm and welcoming environment for each of their clients and guests.

LIKE WHO WOULDN’T WANT TO HOST A THAI DINNER PARTY WITH MY FRIEND, MEW?

On Saturday, we met up at 42&Lawrence downtown Raleigh (the #1 coffee in Raleigh according to yours truly) to discuss how they can grow their business using their Instagram and upcoming website.

Our conversation quickly turned into a chat about their Customer Avatar. A customer avatar is the IDEAL customer. Your dream customer. If you had more people like this avatar come into your business, you’d be THRIVING.

The truth is, they already had a Customer Avatar, they just didn’t know it!  So we started with some questions, all aligning with this worksheet…

CREATING THEIR AVATAR…I began asking Mew to think about previous cooking classes and dinner party clients – especially those repeat customers!

How old are they? Do women book or men book? Where do they live? What types of jobs do they have? Do they follow Raleigh foodie accounts?

I couldn’t give her any direction on what types of ads to create, what information to put in her Instagram bio, or give her content ideas until I knew WHO we are trying to reach.

As marketers, entrepreneurs and business owners of all sizes, we have to know who our target customer is, what they value, how old they are, what makes them tick in order to create content that will make them stop and take action.

And before I go any further, it is possible for a business to have multiple customer avatars! But I’ll save that for another time…

For Eat Thai Raleigh, we were able to put the pieces together who they are truly trying to reach and convert into a customer. Once we created the avatar, the floodgates were lifted and content and business ideas were FLOWING y’all!

SO WHY DO I NEED A CUSTOMER AVATAR?
1. It will help you better allocate your resources by getting better at targeting.
2. You will be able to create content that actually relates to your audience.
3. Your business will grow when you know more about the desires of your customers and how to solve problems for them.
