Book Review: The Old Man and the Sea

Learning at Ugly Mug marketing is something we take very seriously and sometimes reading a fun book is the perfect way to give your brain a break.  So for this month, we are going to get Tim’s thoughts with a book review on the book “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway.

If you could sum up this book in 5 or fewer sentences, what would you say?

📚 The Old Man and the Sea is a great story about perseverance from my perspective. The Old Man in the book is dealing with continuous struggles before you join the story and powers through even more as you read. I read it first in high school and think about it often when I am going through my own struggles. I could say a lot more but it wouldn’t fit into 5 sentences.

What did you learn from reading this?

📚 I learned the power of pushing through. Even when everything is against you it’s important to persevere and stay committed to your goals. Even if sharks are eating the entirety of your pay as you make it back to shore.

What sort of reader would like this book?

📚 Someone who is looking for shorter fiction and wants to think deeper than just what is written. Hemingway has a style of writing that is direct but there’s a lot to it when you think about it. For me at least. I went to school for Marketing, though, not English.

Favorite quote from the book

📚 “Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.”

What star rating would you give this book? (1-5) Would you recommend it?

📚 5 stars. I would absolutely recommend it to everyone. It can even be read in one afternoon.    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
