Lessons From There’s a Customer Born Every Minute

Here are three lessons for freelancers from this book “There’s a Customer Born Every Minute.”

This book is about the life of PT Barnum.

If you don’t know who he is, you need to look him up.

So lesson number one is this.

It doesn’t matter if you’re the absolute best in the world if people don’t know about you, think about it.

It doesn’t matter if you’re the greatest web designer in the entire world, if no one knows about you.

So, Spend more time getting people to know about you than perfecting your craft.

Lesson number two is you need to enter the conversation that is already taking place in people’s minds.

So go to the news and see what people are talking about.

See what they’re interested in.

So maybe a big corporation’s website just got hacked, and you’re a web designer, so you could talk about how you build your websites in such a way that they are unhackable, right?

So that would be tying your business into the news, into the conversation that’s already taking place in your customers, in your prospect’s mind.

And the third lesson is this, that marketing is the expense that you pay.

It’s the expense that I pay when we are boring.

So you can’t be boring, you can’t blend in if you want to stand out, if you wanna capture people’s attention.
